New Brother cartridge still says 'empty'

I have a Brother MFC 5440CN, with LC41BK cartridge. I just replaced with new one and it says 'Ink empty black Replace ink'. I've tried re-installing, unplugging and plugging back in and still doesn't work. Is there some way to reset this so my printer will function properly?

First question: How long have you had the printer?  If it's past the Brother's warrenty, throw it out and get a new printer.  Stay clear of brother though unless you like having a printer that won't print if one color is empty. 

If the printer is still under warrenty, call Brother and tell them what it's doing.  HOWEVER, if you are using compatible or refilled cartridges DO NOT tell them that.  They will void your warrenty and blame the problem on not using OEM (orginial) Brother cartridges.

Hope that you haven't actually thrown the printer out! I had a similar problem with an MFC 420CN which uses the same cartridges. I found a solution by Googling but it was obscure. I can't put my hands on it right this minute but as I recall you should turn the printer off, remove the offending cartridge, close the lid and power up the printer. It will tell you that there is no cartridge. Power off, put in the new cartridge and it should find it.

Note the there is a little float/flag thingie in the center rib of the end of the cartridge. That flag interrupts a light beam when the cartridge is in place; that's what triggers the low ink message, etc.

Sorry that I don't have the exact link for the instructions but perhaps that will help. I don't have that big of a problem with the printer refusing to operate when one of the cartridges runs out. They are quick, easy and cheap to refill. Good luck!
