Refilling Canon PGBK 5 cartridges

For some time I have had trouble with successfully refilling the Canon 10 ml cartridges.  I have filled many of the 5 ml cartridges with no problem and I follow exactly the same procedure with the larger cartridges.  However, the large cartridges always seem to leak the ink out in a short time.  Does anyone have any ideas regarding what I am doing wrong?  The particular cartridge is the 5 PGBK used in the Pixma MP-500 printer.  Thanks, Sid

Re: Refilling Canon PGBK 5 cartridges
There are only a few reason why it would be leaking.
1. Are you using a pigment ink or a dye base?  The PGI-5 is a pigment black and is much thicker ink than the smaller black which uses a photo black.  If you aren't using a pigment ink then the ink is to thin and is just running right through the sponge.

2. The sponge is bad and not holding the ink, but that usually doesn't happen unless it's been refilled many many times.

3. There is to much ink in the cartridge and it's leaking the excess ink out.

4. Are you drilling a hole and then gluing it shut or taping it shut?  If so, never use tape, always use a HOT glue gun.  As soon as you finish filling, make sure the area around the hole is dry and qickly seal it shut with the hot glue.  Make sure it is covered completely though or else the cartridge will keep leaking.  If using tape...well...stop, tape simply won't seal it the way it needs to be sealed.
